CARE & MAINTENANCE GUIDE FOR P SERIES REFILLABLE pH ELECTRODE (PBFA)

Introduction

The P Series pH electrode is a single junction refillable Ag/ AgCl pH electrode with a Bulb glass membrane. The potential is compared to the silver/chloride reference half-cell. Completion of the circuit is through solution contact via a Porous Ceramic Frit.

PH ELECTRODE PREPARATION FOR USE

    • Remove wetting cap covering the sensor membrane
    • Unscrew the sidearm cap to expose the reference filling hole and fill with 3M KCl (electrolyte). The electrolyte level should be kept within 2 cm from the filling hole and always above the sample level during measurement.
    • Gently flick the electrode downward to remove any bubble within the membrane cavity.
    • The filling hole must be left open during measurement to allow electrolyte to flow into the sample.

PH ELECTRODE CALIBRATION

      • Consult the meter instruction manual for meter setup.
      • Connect the electrode (and temperature sensor if applicable), rinse the electrode sensor membrane with distilled water and blot dry.
      • Immerse the electrode in the first pH buffer (usually 6.86 or 7.00), and wait for stable reading. The expected mV reading for pH 7 buffer at 25°C should be between 0±18mV.
      • Rinse the electrode with distilled water and blot dry, before immersing into the second pH buffer (usually 4.00) and wait for a stable reading. If the electrode is performing correctly, the mV difference between the values of the pH7 and pH4 buffers should be at least 169mV (at 25°C).
      • Check your pH calibration by re-measuring the pH 7 buffer. Repeat calibration if necessary.

HELPFUL HINTS TO LONG LIFE & EFFECTIVE USE THE OF PH ELECTRODE

      • Do NOT use the electrode without Membrane protector provided with the electrode. This will ensure the safety of glass membrane from any physical damage.
      • Try to calibrate and measure at the same temperature (within ±5°C or better).
      • Calibrate periodically; frequency will depend on the desired accuracy, and use fresh buffers.
      • Keep electrode and meter connections dry at all times.
      • Use a dedicated high impedance pH meter (do not use multimeters as you may damage the electrode).
      • Immerse the electrode in such a way that the reference junction is completely inside the sample to be tested
      • Do not allow the electrode to come in contact with solutions containing sulphide, or high levels of oils, greases and solids.
      • Ensure the reference electrolyte level is higher than the sample

STORAGE OF PH ELECTRODE AFTER USE

      • SHORT TIME STORAGE

Step 1 – Rinse the electrode membrane & reference junction with Distilled water
Step 2 – Store in the bottle or beaker containing 3M KCL

      • LONG TIME STORAGE

Step 1 – Rinse the electrode membrane & reference junction with Distilled water
Step 2 – Refit the wetting cap on the electrode & store.

While using after long time, rinse the electrode with Distilled water. Change the reference electrolyte completely. Keep the electrode in 3M KCL solution for an hour at least before use.

Cleanliness of the sensor and junction is critical for accurate measurement. Drift, poor slope and slow response are often due to an unclean sensor or junction.

DO NOT use abrasive materials for cleaning.
